The Photography Experience


As your photographer, i promise to make your experience with me as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Knowing that your newborn is in safe hands, you can sit and relax, whilst i capture these memories for you. Photographing those tiny features of your new baby are so important, as we freeze that moment in time, a moment that you can't get back, and a moment where they will never be this small again.


Having a photoshoot at my studio in Doncaster is a way of capturing beautiful and unique images of your baby in their early days. I always highly recommend family photos during the session, to create the legacy of your family, that both you and your growing baby will look back on repeatedly in years to come.

Leading up to your newborn session

Heather Katie photography - newborn specialist.

Prior to your session, i will invite you to my studio where we will discuss themes, colours and props so that i can cater to your preferences and create a personalised experience. With my session no pose is guaranteed as my sessions are completely baby led, and it depends how they are on the day. However you can choose from my wide selection of props and i will be able to use these during your session. I guarantee that we will capture plenty of beautiful images of your newborn baby.

When is the best time?


Newborn sessions ideally take place when baby is between 5-21 days old, as this is when they are at their sleepiest stage, before they learn the amazing feeling of having a good stretch. As your newborn specialist photographer i will arrange your session date to fit between the 5-21 day guidelines as soon as your baby arrives. If the date originally booked doesn't fall in this period (usually due to babies arriving early or late), we can re-arrange the session date so that it does. However i do photograph babies of all ages, so if your baby has already arrived, please don't hesitate to contact me and we can still arrange a booking.


I recommend booking your newborn session shortly after your 12 week scan to ensure availability. Your session date will then be flexible dependent on the arrival of your bundle of joy. All you need to do once you have booked is let me know when they arrive.

Booking your session


A non-refundable deposit is required at the time of booking, this secures your booking, and ensures that you have a given date in the diary. This deposit will be deducted from your total package price, and the outstanding balance must be paid either on the day or before your session.

During your session


DURING YOUR SESSION THE STUDIO WILL BE VERY WARM, THIS IS TO TRY AND KEEP BABY COMFORTABLE AND SLEEPY. PLEASE DRESS ACCORDINGLY, SO THAT YOU CAN REMOVE LAYERS OF CLOTHING FOR YOURSELF IF NECESSARY.

DURING YOUR NEWBORN SESSION, BABY'S WELLBEING IS MY NUMBER ONE PRIORITY SO IF BABY IS FUSSING OR NOT LIKING A POSE WE WILL SIMPLY JUST MOVE ONTO ANOTHER OR STOP FOR A FEED IF THAT'S WHAT THEY NEED. WE WILL TAKE PLENTY OF BREAKS WHERE NECESSARY, TO MAKE SURE BABY IS FULLY SOOTHED AND SETTLED, I MAY ALSO PASS BABY BACK TO YOU BETWEEN SET UPS SO THAT I CAN DO SO SAFELY. YOUR NEWBORN SESSION AT MY STUDIO IN DONCASTER WILL USUALLY TAKE AROUND 2-3 HOURS.

AT YOUR SESSION I RECOMMEND YOU BRING NO MORE THAN YOU, YOUR PARTNER AND CHILDREN. THIS IS TO ENSURE THAT BABY IS NOT OVERWHELMED WITH TOO MANY PEOPLE BEING IN THE STUDIO AND SO THAT IT DOESN'T GET OVERCROWDED. MY AIM DURING YOUR NEWBORN SESSION AT MY STUDIO IN DONCASTER, IS KEEP A CALM AND QUIET ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR BABY. IF YOU ARE BRINGING YOUNG CHILDREN IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THEY ATTEND THE BEGINNING OR END OF THE SESSION AS THEY CAN QUICKLY BECOME RESTLESS AND CAN HAVE DIFFICULTY SITTING AROUND DURING A NEWBORN SESSION. IF IT IS NECESSARY THAT THEY STAY THE ENTIRE SESSION PLEASE ENSURE YOU BRING PLENTY OF QUIET ENTERTAINMENT, BOOKS AND SNACKS FOR THEM. THEY WILL BE YOUR FULL RESPONSIBILITY AS MY PRIORITY AND MAIN FOCUS WILL BE THE BABY. YOU ARE ALSO WELCOME TO BRING DRINKS AND SNACKS FOR YOURSELF AS THE SESSION USUALLY TAKES BETWEEN 2-3 HOURS.


PLEASE DO NOT STRESS IF DURING THE SESSION YOUR BABY POOPS OR WEES, IT IS COMPLETELY NORMAL AND HAPPENS OFTEN. I AM NOT UPSET OR OFFENDED BY THIS SO PLEASE DON'T WORRY. ALL USED BACKDROPS AND PROPS ARE THOROUGHLY CLEANED AFTER EACH AND EVERY SESSION REGARDLESS OF ANY ACCIDENTS.

AROUND A WEEK AFTER YOUR SESSION YOU WILL REVISIT MY STUDIO FOR YOUR VIEWING SESSION, WHERE I WILL SHOW YOU A SLIDESHOW OF ALL THE BEAUTIFUL IMAGES WE CAPTURED DURING YOUR NEWBORN SESSION. YOU WILL THEN HAVE THE CHANCE TO SELECT AND FAVOURITE YOUR IMAGES. ONCE YOU HAVE DECIDED WE WILL DISCUSS ANY WALL ART AND PRINTS, AND I WILL ORDER THESE PROFESSIONAL, HIGH QUALITY PRODUCTS FOR YOU. AFTER THE FACE TO FACE VIEWING SESSION, YOU WILL ALSO RECEIVE A LINK TO AN ONLINE GALLERY OF ALL YOUR CHOSEN DIGITAL IMAGES.

Prints and Products


Prints and orders will be ordered shortly after your face to face viewing session. If you would like to order extra products all you need to do is let me know and i shall add them to the order. Additional images, prints and products can be purchased during your viewing session where you will select your images. Please note that i have no control over production times and shipping, however i will notify you as soon as your products are ready to collect.

Preparation guide


  • Try to keep baby awake as much as possible in the few hours leading up to your session.
  • Feed your baby just before you leave your home so that they will arrive nice and full. Bring extra milk for top ups incase baby needs any throughout the session. If you are breastfeeding you are absolutely welcome to have baby feed from you in my studio (Former breastfeeding mama too!).
  • Dress baby either in an outfit you would like a photograph in, or a onesie and vest which are easy to remove at the start of the session.
  • Please bring a dummy if your baby uses one, this will help in soothing and repositioning for different poses.

We booked Heather for a maternity photoshoot and a newborn photoshoot. Heather took her time with both. She was patient and a pleasure to be around. Heather took care with our newborn baby, and ensured she was using safe methods to settle him & position him while getting the best photos. She is clearly very knowledgable. The study was clean and well kept. All the items she used were clean, and I noticed she kept them separate ready to be washed again before using for the next client.


Heather sent us the pre-edited photos to choose our final photos in around two weeks. A few weeks later, we were sent the final photos, which were absolutely beautiful. She asked if we were happy with everything and stayed in contact throughout the editing process.
